Can anybody explain to me why Professor David Barash, a highly intelligent man and probably the world´s leading expert on polygamy, writes book after book gathering the science that polygamy is natural and monogamy is hard for us, only to go on then to claim that monogamy is nonetheless the better choice for us?
Now I understand he tries to explain why so many humans live monogamous, but it still seems strange.
His new book Out of Eden: The Surprising Consequences of Polygamy” is out (see also below for reviews on goodreads), and here he goes in the opinion pages of the LA-Times.
Monogamy is a mystery. A Martian zoologist, visiting Earth and noting our basic biology — not to mention our frequent philandering — would conclude that monogamy is not “natural” to the human species. So why is it so widely promulgated, especially in the modern Western world?
