Is Polygamy an attack on the institution of marriage? Discussion on Quora

A noteworthy discussion, with some people making points of high-level quality, took place recently on Quora:

I particularly liked the answer of Guy Taylor from which i quote an excerpt here, because it sums up so well how nonsensical the arguments of the conservatuves are that there is an “eternal” (i.e. neverchanging) institution of marriage that is endangered today by same-sex marriage and demands to legalize polygamy:

“Monogamy, polygamy, polygyny, polyandry, polygynandry and promiscuity (represented by Open Marriage and Serial Polygamy) are mating systems explored by studies like Ethology.and Anthropology.
Marriage is a Legal or Civil institution,a Cultural institution and a Religious institution.
Each geopolitical region and each culture has its own unique form of traditional institutions such as marriage. Over the centuries history records that tradition is far from eternal.”
